Adultery Fridays & Bison & Mixtapes

I have a new post up at the Foreign Policy Association. Three short bits on why Vitamin A should be everywhere, the shackling of female prisoners during childbirth, and abuses of workers on South African wine farms (boo). FYI, HRW does not identify the wine farms that are illegally evicting farm workers, among a host of other not great practices. If I see anything else, I'll follow up. You can go read my post (please!) and/or watch this video for more info, though:

Also, I went to Golden Gate Park the other day. Did you know they have a bison paddock there (gift of Senator Dianne Feinstein, former mayor of SF, whose husband gave her the bison)? Well, now you do. See?

And I just found this blog, Turntable Kitchen, and it is INCREDIBLE. Go check out their mixtapes. I'm really digging on this one. Partially for the High Fidelity reference. You're welcome.

Unpacked & Unclear

So, I'm finally in SF full-time. Probably. It's been just over six weeks of traveling, unpacking, packing, re-evaluating, re-packing, driving, wedding-ing, and eating, (of these last two, I'll throw up a few photos soon). Sometimes I think I now spend most of my time hauling things up and down stairs--suitcases, food, and various pieces of IKEA furniture, including a mattress that almost made my sister and me re-evaluate whether we wanted to share genetic material any longer. Overall, it's been great to be "home" (not sure what that means anymore...). A lot of transition and not a lot of time to think, however. But I think it'll all come to me eventually. Whatever that means.

Before I forget, I have a new post up at the Foreign Policy Association. This time, I discuss Human Rights Watch's report on maternal mortality and the public health care system in South Africa.

And here's a cute little video from Andrew Ross Sorkin and Sam Grobart from The NYT. Cute, silly, and a reminder that when you work for the world's best/whatever newspaper, sometimes you get to do stuff like this. In other words, play with smartphones, chill with 50 Cent, and drink a martini in a completely empty Cipriani.

Adultery Tuesdays

New post at the Foreign Policy Association, this time on the famine in Somalia.

I considered putting the video of the first five minutes of "Get Him to Greek" in the post but then decided that it wasn't really appropriate. Except that it so, so is. Which means that I think you should go watch it. Not really safe for work (the naked bits are blurred out, yes, but there are also lots of bad words), but truly hilariously funny. Unfortunately it won't embed, so hop on over here to watch it. You will not be disappointed.

A Cape Town Reunion in Maine

I just got back from Portland, Maine, where I got to visit some of my favorite people in the world. You probably know (or recognize) most of them from various Cape Town antics. A few of them are pictured above. And below.

And this is one of the many lovely views I got to take in:

Thanks to James for the second photo (the one with the whole group).

Moving In (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Fog)

First things first: Adultery Fridays. New post on the House Appropriation's proposal for the 2012 State and Foreign Operations Bill. As per usual, I am unhappy with the state of things.

So, I'm officially moved into my apartment with my sis in San Francisco. We're living in the adorable, admittedly up-market Cow Hollow neighborhood (between Pacific Heights and the Marina). It's apparently the sunniest spot in the city, which is good for a sun-worshiping Southern Californian like me. I haven't done much in SF so far (including a trip up just over a week ago to get all the requisite goodies from Ikea), but this weekend promises to give me a better taste of the city, with two trips across the Bay to Oakland, several appearances at delicious-sounding restaurants, and some dancing on the docket. More to come, slowly, as I figure out how I want this blog to work going forward. So that you feel slightly less neglected, I've added some pictures of the new digs--my room and the living room. It's pretty damn nice.

Adultery (Saturdays)

I head up to San Francisco next week, but it's a whirlwind after that...I promise I'll get it together. Until then, here's my newest global health post.

Adultery Fridays

I'll get it together. One day. I promise. But, new post at Foreign Policy blogs. I didn't like the CIA's fake vaccination program.
